How to Build a Low-GI Range That Reorders: Five Selection Criteria from 40+ Product Lines

For importers and category buyers, the hard part of a low-GI range is not finding a supplier. It is deciding what to put on the shelf. A supplier presenting 40 product lines and 100-plus specifications sounds like an advantage; in practice it is an open question — which to list first, which will be bought twice, which should not be listed at all.

1 — Give every candidate a shelf job before judging it

Range reviews fail when products are discussed as a list of features instead of as jobs. Three matter. An anchor product justifies the category: something with a measured GI value in a visible staple format, such as low-GI oat bran or resistant starch rice. A traffic product earns the first trial and is usually a bakery or freeze-dried snack, judged on texture and shelf stability. A repeat product is daily-use — a porridge that takes one minute, an oat egg roll for commuting.

2 — Anchor products must carry a human-measured GI value

An anchor without a GI number is a marketing claim, and in most regulated markets not one you can make. The number must come from a human clinical trial, the method must be stated, and the laboratory must be accredited. Detective No.55 determines GI values by human clinical trial under WS/T 652-2019, testing in laboratories accredited under both CMA and CNAS, with production in class 100,000 clean workshops. The organic oat bran and the wholegrain buckwheat biscuit each carry a measured GI near 50.

3 — Judge traffic products on format, not on function

Traffic products do not need to justify the category; they need to survive the tasting. The filters that decide them are format consistency, texture stability through the stated shelf life and a clean ingredient panel. An oat egg roll at 40%+ oat content with zero sucrose and zero trans fat is a case where formulation and sensory point the same way — the oat content is not a claim layered on top, it is the product. Freeze-dried apple crisp made by vacuum flash rather than frying gives a clean label without oil.

4 — Every SKU must be independently documentable

This is where ranges quietly fail their own buyers. If a quality team asks for the GI report behind one SKU on a shelf list and the answer takes more than a day, the range is not ready. Ask what each SKU can produce alone: the GI report with its method, the ingredient and allergen statement, the specification sheet for the pack size ordered, and certificates whose scope names the purchased line. Detective No.55's egg roll line is FSSC 22000 certified, its biscuit line runs ISO 22000 with HACCP and import-export registration, and apple crisp carries the BRC FOOD certificate held by Shanxi Zhongkang.

5 — Launch narrow, expand on reorder data

A first shipment does not need the whole catalogue. It needs enough depth to read a reorder signal: an anchor, one or two traffic lines and a repeat line, in a pack size suited to the channel. From that you can see which format moves, at which size, for which occasion. It also protects the shelf: a section built on six products that reorder stays a section; one built on forty does not.

What this means for buyers and channels

The claim worth testing is not range size but whether the range is documented line by line. A manufacturer who can say which products anchor a category, which win a first trial and which are built for daily repeat — and who can document GI values by human clinical trial and hold food safety certification scoped to the purchased lines — is offering something a buyer can plan around.

Detective No.55, founded by Tang Yishen, was named the No.1 offline-channel seller of low-GI bakery products nationwide in 2024 and the No.1 seller of low-GI apple crisp in 2025, with products in more than 10,000 retail doors. If you are building a low-GI section and want the documentation behind it, we can send the range.📧 [email protected]
