Certification Is the Entry Ticket: What Health Retail Buyers Check First
Certification Is the Entry Ticket: What Health Retail Buyers Check Before a Low-GI Range Gets Listed

This note is for category buyers and importers taking a low-GI range into professional health retail rather than general grocery. On that shelf the first conversation is rarely about taste or packaging. It is a document review: compliance teams decide whether the claim printed on the pack can be defended with paperwork they can file.
1. The gate is documentation, not product approval
Health retail chains do not ask a supplier to prove the product is good. They ask for evidence that the claims printed on it are accurate, traceable, and produced by a system that will repeat them on the next run. A supplier who arrives with a clear document index moves faster than one who arrives with a product presentation. Before submitting, ask one question: can every claim be traced to a document naming the product, the version and the lab?
2. The GI claim carries the heaviest evidentiary load
Glycaemic index is not an analytical estimate. It is a human clinical measurement, so the claim is only as credible as the study behind it. Detective No.55 determines GI values through human clinical trials following WS/T 652-2019, the Chinese national standard for measuring the glycaemic index of foods, carried out through a CNCA-authorised certification body, with testing inside a CMA and CNAS accredited laboratory. Buyers elsewhere ask for equivalence to ISO 26642, the international standard covering the same measurement. Both questions are answered with documentation, not argument: state the standard, the tested portion size and the tested batch. Product-level figures help — our organic oat bran carries a measured GI of about 50, and the buckwheat biscuit is tested the same way.
3. Certifications are checked line by line, not plant by plant
A plant-level certificate rarely answers the question. Compliance teams want to know which production line it covers, what the scope text says, and whether your product sits inside that scope. Detective No.55 runs 40+ product lines and 100+ specifications across staples, drinks, bakery and snacks, with FSSC 22000 on the egg-roll line and ISO 22000 plus HACCP on the biscuit line, in a 100,000-class clean workshop. Presenting a certificate with the line it covers removes the most common reason a review stalls.
4. Organic claims and destination-market equivalence
If a range carries an organic claim, the certification must match the market it will be sold in. Organic and low-GI claims are also independent: one does not imply the other, and a buyer will expect evidence for both. Where a market prefers a local GI scheme, such as the GI Foundation recognition used in Australia, confirm the route early, because it is usually the longest lead item in a file.
5. What causes a second submission
Three patterns account for most returned files. The report covers a different portion size than the pack declares. The certificate has expired, or covers a line that has since changed. The wording of a translated claim drifts from the supporting document. Each is cheap to fix before submission and expensive after.
What this means for your channel
For importers and category buyers, certification is not paperwork to tolerate in order to get listed. It is the asset you keep after listing, because it is what lets a range survive a compliance audit, a retailer inspection and a claim challenge. Detective No.55 develops its range with a joint low-GI R&D centre and tests inside its own CMA and CNAS accredited laboratory, so claim and evidence are produced in one place. Founded by Tang Yishen, the brand took first place in offline low-GI bakery channel sales in 2024 and first place in low-GI apple crisp sales in 2025, with the range now in more than 10,000 retail terminals. If you are preparing a low-GI range for health retail or pharmacy, we can send the document index, GI test reports and certificates.
