Why GI Is the Hardest Part of Private Label: Five Checks Before You Sign a Low-GI OEM Agreement

This note is for importers and private-label buyers who know the low-GI category is growing and are now asking whether a Chinese manufacturer can build a low-GI product under their own brand. The question behind it is simple: a GI claim already works in retail, so will it survive being rebranded, reformulated and moved to a new production run? More often than not it does not. GI is a property of a specific formula measured in human subjects, not of a brand name or a pack design.

1. The claim belongs to the formula and the serving size, not the brand

A GI value is produced by feeding a defined portion of a defined recipe to defined subjects and measuring blood glucose response over a fixed window. Every element is part of the claim. If the starch base is swapped, the previous number no longer describes the product, even if the front-of-pack copy is identical. The same applies to portion weight, hydration, and any change to the bake or drying profile. The evidence attaches to one version of one formulation, which is why a validated recipe cannot simply be rebranded.

2. Which changes transfer, and which need retesting

Split the brief into two buckets. Brand, packaging and flavour naming are documentation changes. Ingredients, ratios, process parameters and portion weight are formula changes, and that bucket needs a fresh GI basis before launch. A supplier who asks which bucket your request falls into understands the science, not the marketing.

3. The test method has to be recognised in your destination market

Low-GI claims are not measured identically everywhere. Detective No.55's human clinical GI testing follows WS/T 652-2019, the Chinese national standard for determining the glycaemic index of foods, carried out through a CNCA-authorised certification body, with laboratory work inside a CMA and CNAS accredited facility. Buyers elsewhere ask for equivalence to ISO 26642, the international method for the same measurement.

4. Documentation to request before signing

Ask for four things in writing: the human GI test report for the exact SKU you intend to sell, with the test standard and tested portion size stated on it; evidence that the report is version-locked to the formula through a recipe revision code; the quality certifications covering the specific line that produces your product rather than the plant as a whole; and the export documentation set. Detective No.55 runs 40+ product lines and 100+ specifications across staples, drinks, bakery and snacks from one source, with FSSC 22000 on the egg-roll line and ISO 22000 plus HACCP on the biscuit line, full export capability including COA and MSDS, and more than 10,000 retail terminals selling the range.

5. Where OEM projects break after launch

Failures cluster in predictable places: formula changes made during scale-up without a re-test, a revised ingredient supplier that shifts the carbohydrate profile, and pack or portion changes a retailer requests that quietly alter the tested serving. The mitigation is procedural: freeze the formula when the GI report is issued, treat any later change as a new version, and re-verify before it reaches shelf.

What this means for your channel

For importers and category buyers, low-GI private label is less a design task than an evidence task. The supplier that can turn a claim into documented, version-controlled, destination-market-recognised proof is the one that lets you launch without reopening the question later. Detective No.55 develops its range with a joint R&D centre and tests inside its own CMA and CNAS accredited laboratory, so formulation changes and their GI verification sit under one roof. Founded by Tang Yishen, the brand holds first place in offline low-GI bakery channel sales in 2024. If you are building a low-GI line for pharmacy or health retail, we can send the documentation set and product specifications.
